Presentation - The Conference Table Problem

L’équipe POEM regroupe des chercheurs travaillant principalement dans les champs des politiques publiques, économie et marchés. Elle a pour vecteur commun un intérêt pour l’activité et l’organisation du secteur public. Les angles d’analyse privilégiés sont :

- l’étude de la conception et de la conduite des politiques publiques, ainsi que leur évaluation ;

- l’analyse positive et normative des institutions et organisations publiques, de leur mode de gouvernance et des questions posées par leur management.

We investigate an hedonic seat-arrangement model in which individuals with strict ordinal preferences over other individuals must be seated on a cycle graph, each individual being assigned to exactly two neighbors. Comparing tables from the individual viewpoint requires extending preferences over individuals to preferences over pairs of individuals. We focus on the separable extension and its coarsenings, and investigate the existence of swap-stable tables, arrangements at which no two individuals benefit from exchanging seats. Swap-stability is not guaranteed in general, so our main contribution is establishing several domain restrictions that are sufficient for swap-stability. Moreover, we show that swap-stability under a natural coarsening of separable extension is guaranteed without any domain restriction. We further study swap-stability under a property-rights refinement and discuss its mutual compatibility with strategy-proofness and Pareto efficiency.
